Rust is a realistic survival multiplayer game where the players are put into a randomly generated world. In this world, the threats aren’t monsters or zombies – it’s mostly other players and predators such as wolves and bears.
But the wildlife isn’t the only danger here. The player needs to take care of their avatar’s human needs. These include staying warm, fed, and hydrated.
Drinking water, however, is a bit more complex than it may seem. In this article, we’re going to teach you how to stay hydrated.
How to Get Water in Rust
The most straightforward way to quench your thirst is drinking from lakes and rivers. Saltwater, like in real life, isn’t drinking water. You can also create water catchers and use bottles to gather water.
Let’s dive deeper into staying hydrated in this open-world multiplayer game and making water-related items.
How to Get Water Catcher in Rust
Imagine being trapped on an island without a body of water that isn’t saltwater. You’d rely on rainwater to stay hydrated and survive. Water Catchers are craftable items that help you gather rainwater and use it for hydration. They’re used so that you don’t have to travel to a river/lake every time you get thirsty.
There are two types of Water Catcher in Rust: Small Water Catcher and Large Water Catcher.
The small catcher takes a single square foundation, while the large one takes 2×2 squares. The only drawback is that you can’t place the catchers on foundations, floors, or in caves.
For crafting the Small Water Catcher, you’re going to need 100 Wood, 50 Metal Fragments, and a Trap. The Large Water Catcher requires 500 Wood, 200 Metal Fragments, and two Traps. The former takes 60 seconds to craft, and the latter takes 120 seconds.
The Small Water Catcher has a 10-liter capacity, while the large one can hold up to 50 liters of rainwater.
How to Get Water Gun in Rust
There is no way to craft a water gun in Rust. However, there is a recently released DLC, called “The Sunburn Pack,” which features various summer-related features, from pools to, you guessed it, water guns.
Keep in mind that a water gun doesn’t cause any damage but does enable you to soak your friends. The DLC brings a water gun and a pump-action soaker to the table, in addition to sunglasses, umbrellas, beach towels (which can be used as respawn points), etc.
How to Get Waterpipe Shotgun in Rust
The waterpipe shotgun isn’t a part of the DLC mentioned above. It’s a single-fire ranged weapon; an actual, deadly shotgun. It can use four types of ammo: 12-Gauge Buckshot, 12-Gauge Incendiary, 12-Gauge Slug, and Handmade Shell. This is a powerful weapon that fires a pellet barrage that’s very deadly at close range.
To craft it, you’ll need 100 Wood and 75 Metal Fragments. The weapon can be further upgraded with a laser light, flashlight, holo sight/4x scope.
To craft the Weapon Lasersight upgrade, you need 3 High-Quality Metal and 1 Tech Trash. The Weapon Flashlight upgrade requires 3 High-Quality Metal. For the Holosight upgrade, you need 12 High-Quality Metal and 1 Tech Trash. The Zoom Scope requires 50 High-Quality Metal.
How to Get Water From River in Rust
Water availability in Rust is based on your spawning luck. If you happen to spawn near a river or a lake, you’ll be able to quench your avatar’s thirst by drinking from it. You should also be able to find plenty of food around said body of water.
That’s why it’s important to explore early in the game. If you’re not lucky enough to spawn near a river, don’t build a camp or stay at the place where you’ve spawned. Go ahead, look for a body of water, and establish your camp within its proximity.
How to Get Water Bucket in Rust
The Water Bucket is for transporting liquids from one place to another, including drinking water. It has a 2-liter capacity and is relatively simple to build.
To craft the Water Bucket item, you need 20 Metal Fragments. To fill up the water bucket, simply hold the right mouse button near a body of water.
You can use the bucket for drinking water storage until you’ve come up with a better solution. Water buckets can also extinguish campfires, furnaces, lanterns, incendiary weapons, etc.
How to Get Water and Food in Rust
There are various ways to find water and food in Rust. Rainwater and rivers/lakes are the two primary water sources. You can create pumps and place them near bodies of water, or you can craft Water Catchers. Throughout the game, you’ll find various ways to obtain and supply water at your convenience.
Food is generally found near bodies of water. Animals gather nearby, and various fruits like to grow near the water source. You can also find food in abandoned supermarkets and other deserted, slightly urban areas.
How to Get Water Fast in Rust
The quickest way to get water once you’ve spawned in Rust is to go looking for a body of water. In the beginning, finding the ingredients for crafting a Water Catcher or a bucket shouldn’t be your primary concern. Once you’ve set up camp near water, you can plan your next actions.
If you do have the ingredients, creating a Small Water Catcher is a rather quick way to get your hands on some greatly needed water.
How to Get Large Water Catcher in Rust
At some point, as you’re upgrading your camp, you’re going to find yourself in need of more water. Building multiple Small Water Catchers is okay, but a large one has the capacity of five small ones, and it’s much cheaper than building the latter.
You can craft a Large Water Catcher with the ingredients mentioned in the “How to Get Water Catcher in Rust” section above. However, you are going to need a blueprint for this. The Large Water Catcher blueprint can be found in military/elite crates. Small Water Catcher blueprint drops from regular wood crates.
How to Fill a Water Bottle in Rust
You can find a Small Water Bottle in trash piles. It’s a very useful item for water storing and temporarily postponing dehydration. To fill a water bottle or any similar container, equip the empty bottle, look at the water source, and right-click to fill it. To drink water out of the Small Water Bottle item, equip it and press the left click.
How to Get Salt Water in Rust
Saltwater doesn’t have much use in Rust unless you use a Water Purifier. To obtain saltwater, just stand near the saltwater source and fill a receptacle like you would any other liquid. You won’t be able to drink it, though.
You can also create a Water Purifier that can turn seawater into drinkable water.
This device is placed over a campfire to start the purification process. To build the water purifier, you need:
- 1 Empty Propane Tank
- 10 Cloth
- 15 Metal Fragments
To use this device, pour the seawater into the Water Purifier tank. The water is then cooked and poured into the bucket placed to the side. Once the bucket fills, you can drink from it. It is capable of holding two liters of fresh water and a great way to combat dehydration when there’s no fresh water in sight.
