Minecraft allows players to customize their world and surroundings with almost no limitations. The same concept applies to the player character as well. The default skins in Minecraft are somewhat boring and can get repetitive after a while. That’s why the online repository of user-created skins and the official marketplace can be an indispensable source of additional customization options.

How to Change Your Minecraft Skin
The first step towards changing your skin is to decide whether you want to use a default in-game skin or go for a custom one. If you’re leaning towards user-created options, you’ll need to visit one of the many Minecraft skin websites.

- Choose “Change Skin.” You’ll be taken to a different skill selection menu, with a list of available skins and packs that have been or could be purchased. Skins that aren’t free have a padlock next to them.
- Choose the skin you want, and press “A” on the Xbox or “X” on the PlayStation.
- If your skin needs to be purchased first, you’ll need to leave payment information in the subsequent menu in the console store and follow further instructions. You can press “B” (Xbox) or the circle (PS) to exit the purchasing menu.
- Once purchased, the skin will be automatically applied to your character.
Change Minecraft Skin in Minecraft Pocket Edition (PE)
Despite not having some of the vital features the Bedrock and Java versions have to offer, Minecraft mobile players can have some fun with skins, too.
The process for downloading a custom skin is largely the same when you’re using a mobile device. Alternatively, you can download the image on the PC and send it to the mobile device.
Once you’ve downloaded the skin you want to use, follow these steps:
- Open Minecraft PE on your mobile device.
- Tap on the coathanger icon on the right in the main menu.
- You’ll see multiple tabs on the left. If you want to use a default or official skin, select it from the skin packs.
- If you want to use a custom skin, select the blank skin icon (typically on the far right in “Default” tab).
- Select “Choose New Skin” in the right portion.
- The game will open your image gallery. Navigate to the item you’ve downloaded, usually “Recent items” and select the appropriate skin file.
- Select the skin model you want to use. There are two options, a slimmer on the left and a wider on the right. We recommend choosing the right option since most user-created skins work on that skin model.
- Tap on “Confirm” to finish customer customization.
- Go back into the menu and start up the game as normal.

How to add an outer or second skin layer in Minecraft?
Starting with version 1.8, all skins can have a second (outer) skin layer for added customization. Devices running an older version of the game will only display the base layer. The game version is displayed in the launcher or the main menu.
All character skins are simply maps of pixels in 2D that are transferred onto the character according to a specific map. The outer skin layer uses additional pixel coordinates. Why don’t I see my skin in Multiplayer?

If you’re using version 1.8 or later and have chosen a slim skin for a classic-size model, your skin will show black lines on the character arms due to a size and model discrepancy.
To rectify this change, select the appropriate skin for the model you’ve selected. Versions 1.7.9 and older don’t have a slim model, and uploading a slim skin will add the black lines. Choose a classic-sized skin instead.
