How to Change Your Minecraft Skin

Minecraft allows players to customize their world and surroundings with almost no limitations. The same concept applies to the player character as well. The default skins in Minecraft are somewhat boring and can get repetitive after a while. That’s why the online repository of user-created skins and the official marketplace can be an indispensable source of additional customization options.

How to Change Your Minecraft Skin

In this article, we’ll explain how to change your character’s Minecraft skin on PC, mobile, and console versions.

How to Change Your Minecraft Skin

The first step towards changing your skin is to decide whether you want to use a default in-game skin or go for a custom one. If you’re leaning towards user-created options, you’ll need to visit one of the many Minecraft skin websites.

We can recommend a few of the most popular ones, like MinecraftSkins or NameMC, but the choice is ultimately yours.

Whatever website you choose for the skins; you’ll need to download the skin to your device:

  1. Close Minecraft.
  2. Open the skin website in your favorite browser.
  3. Select the skin you want to use.
  4. Press on the “Download” or “Purchase” button. Be mindful of any additional website features or conditions when
  5. Save the image when prompted.

Custom skins are not available for console players since they can’t download and store skins.

Change Minecraft Skin on Desktop

When changing the Minecraft skin on the PC version, you can use the associated official Minecraft website and your account:

  1. Log in to Minecraft.net with your account credentials in the “Log in” screen.
  2. Go to the skin selection section (link) or the “Skin” tab.
  3. You can use “Browse” or “Select a File” to select from a list of skins you’ve unlocked or purchased on your account. This option will work for any official skin or custom skins.
  4. Choose the image file you downloaded from the file explorer.
  5. Click the “Upload” button.
  6. You’re done! The next time you open the game, your character will be wearing the skin you’ve chosen.

Change Minecraft Skin in Console Editions

The Minecraft console versions have largely merged with the Windows 10 version in the Bedrock Edition. However, the skin selection process is vastly different, since there is no option to download or use custom skins. Players are limited to a pre-selected array of official skins and skin packs to use for customization. At least you can change the skin from the game menus:

  1. Open Minecraft on your console.
  2. Select “Help & Options” in the main menu.
  3. Choose “Change Skin.” You’ll be taken to a different skill selection menu, with a list of available skins and packs that have been or could be purchased. Skins that aren’t free have a padlock next to them.
  4. Choose the skin you want, and press “A” on the Xbox or “X” on the PlayStation.
  5. If your skin needs to be purchased first, you’ll need to leave payment information in the subsequent menu in the console store and follow further instructions. You can press “B” (Xbox) or the circle (PS) to exit the purchasing menu.
  6. Once purchased, the skin will be automatically applied to your character.

Change Minecraft Skin in Minecraft Pocket Edition (PE)

Despite not having some of the vital features the Bedrock and Java versions have to offer, Minecraft mobile players can have some fun with skins, too.

The process for downloading a custom skin is largely the same when you’re using a mobile device. Alternatively, you can download the image on the PC and send it to the mobile device.

Once you’ve downloaded the skin you want to use, follow these steps:

  1. Open Minecraft PE on your mobile device.
  2. Tap on the coathanger icon on the right in the main menu.
  3. You’ll see multiple tabs on the left. If you want to use a default or official skin, select it from the skin packs.
  4. If you want to use a custom skin, select the blank skin icon (typically on the far right in “Default” tab).
  5. Select “Choose New Skin” in the right portion.
  6. The game will open your image gallery. Navigate to the item you’ve downloaded, usually “Recent items” and select the appropriate skin file.
  7. Select the skin model you want to use. There are two options, a slimmer on the left and a wider on the right. We recommend choosing the right option since most user-created skins work on that skin model.
  8. Tap on “Confirm” to finish customer customization.
  9. Go back into the menu and start up the game as normal.

Additional FAQs

How to add an outer or second skin layer in Minecraft?

Starting with version 1.8, all skins can have a second (outer) skin layer for added customization. Devices running an older version of the game will only display the base layer. The game version is displayed in the launcher or the main menu.

All character skins are simply maps of pixels in 2D that are transferred onto the character according to a specific map. The outer skin layer uses additional pixel coordinates. You can use this guide for reference on skin models, with the outer layer checkered out. When making a skin, fill the second layer in with the texture you want to display.

Why don’t I see my skin in Multiplayer?

If you can’t see your skin when playing in Multiplayer mode, try logging out then back into your Minecraft account.

Alternatively, the game might be running in offline mode, which can disable custom skins when using the website to select them. This means every player will have only their default skin shown.

Do I have to pay to change my skin?

When choosing skins, you’ll be prompted to purchase skins if you’re not logged into an account that has purchased Minecraft: Java Edition.

Some custom skins are also purchasable. Their details and the website specifications will be listed on the respective third-party website.

Why are there black lines on my skin’s arms?

If you’re using version 1.8 or later and have chosen a slim skin for a classic-size model, your skin will show black lines on the character arms due to a size and model discrepancy.

To rectify this change, select the appropriate skin for the model you’ve selected. Versions 1.7.9 and older don’t have a slim model, and uploading a slim skin will add the black lines. Choose a classic-sized skin instead.

You can use the appropriate skin templates found on this page if you need to edit a skin you’ve made previously. The only thing that needs to be changed is extending the arm portions (middle right and bottom right) by one pixel.
