When Hearthstone was released, there were nine hero classes in the game. Each class was balanced with a distinct playstyle and offered players a range of options to immerse in the game.
However, a lot of players were asking for more classes and more choices. Their prayers went unanswered until the spring of 2020 when the new Demon Hunter class was released.

How to Unlock Demon Hunter in Hearthstone?
When starting on a new account, each player has to go through the tutorial section and the process of obtaining classes by defeating them in Practice Mode against an AI opponent. Demon Hunter, being the only newly designed hero class since the game’s inception, is an outlier.
To get the class, you’ll need to access your Quests:
- Go to the main menu.
- Click on “Solo Adventures.”
- Scroll down the list on the right until you find the “Ashes of the Outlands” expansion.
- Click on the expansion to pull up a list of related quests.
- Select “Prologue.”
- This single-player mission line will take you through four matches.
- Once you defeat the four bosses, you’ll be awarded the Demon Hunter class along with all the starting cards.
When you finish the prologue, the class is set to level 20 in terms of player progression. Leveling up will give you golden versions of the basic cards. Unlike with other classes, golden neutral cards are not given as level rewards.
Since the class wasn’t featured in any of the expansions before “Ashes of the Outlands,” all expansions in 2020 had an increased number of Demon Hunter class cards compared to other classes. While it still has a lower number of total cards, it has roughly the same amount of playable cards in the Standard ladder.
Demon Hunter Alternate Heroes
When Demon Hunter was released in the game, it started following similar rules to other hero classes. Winning 500 ranked or Arena games will give your hero a golden flare (and animate them if they’re not already animated). Furthermore, new Demon Hunter alternate heroes will become available for purchases down the line.
Winning 1,000 games with a hero class will also unlock the alternate portrait for that hero class.
Demon Hunter Playstyle
In a unique twist, the Demon Hunter is a notable separation from some of the game’s earliest concepts. For example, the Hero Power for the class costs only one mana as opposed to the standard two. This allows the player to weave the Hero Power with other cards more effectively.
On the other hand, since it has a lower impact on the game when used (compared to some other powers), it becomes less effective in the later portions of the game.
The class lends itself to a more aggressive playstyle, thanks in part to the low-cost Hero Power. Since you can use it more often and fill out your mana curve more effectively, you’ll get more mileage out of cheaper minions. Some Demon Hunter cards also make direct use of the Hero Power to operate. Satyr Overseer (a basic card) will give you a small minion each time your hero attack.
If you plan to make a Demon Hunter deck, consider gearing towards an aggro or midrange deck that swarms the boards and chips in for damage each turn when possible. Late-game finishers will usually come well before players have ten mana available.
Demon Hunter decks also suffer from a general lack of high-quality, high-cost minions, and don’t have many ways to generate additional cards (although their card draw is efficient). Controlling decks such as “Control Warrior” or Priest decks will have better minions and can win if they survive their shaky early game.

What Level Does Demon Hunter Unlock?
There are no level requirements for unlocking the Demon Hunter class. All you have to do is enter the “Solo Adventures” mode and defeat the Prologue missions.
After Demon Hunter is unlocked, it starts at level 20 as opposed to level one with other classes. Leveling rewards change appropriately to only give you class cards, and the rate of getting these cards will diminish.
Can You Play Demon Hunters in Hearthstone Arena?
Yes, the Arena game mode is available for the Demon Hunter class. Since their Hero Power costs only one mana, your drafting should accommodate it. You’ll be able to use the Hero Power more effectively each turn than most other classes.
In comparison, it becomes somewhat obsolete later in the game as other classes get comparatively more value out of their two-mana Power.
When Can You Play Demon Hunter in Hearthstone?
After unlocking the class in the Prologue missions, you get a deck made from basic class cards to start playing immediately. The deck won’t show up if you’ve maxed out your available deck slots.
How Do You Unlock Demonic Illidan?
Demonic Illidan is the alternate portrait version of the Demon Hunter basic hero Illidan Stormrage. You can unlock it by winning 1,000 games in the ranked ladder or Arena (cumulatively).
Is Demon Hunter Free on Hearthstone?
Unlocking the class is a free mission that every player will get in their “Solo Adventures” mode. After they’ve unlocked the class and the accompanying basic cards, other class cards can be crafted just like any other card in the game.
Why Can’t I Play Demon Hunter After Unlocking It?
If you have completed the Prologue missions, but can’t play with the class or make a new Demon Hunter deck, restart the game.
If you have the maximum number of decks in use, the Demon Hunter deck won’t appear in your collection, although the cards will be added as normal.
How Much Do Demon Hunter Cards Cost?
