DoorDash is one of the biggest and most popular on-demand food delivery apps on the market. They stayed competitive thanks to their “Cash on Delivery” option.
This feature allowed DoorDash drivers to accept orders that will be paid in cash by the customers. However, the service has been suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Still, DoorDash will hopefully resume this service at some point, so it’s worth knowing how it works. Plus, in this article, we’ll discuss how you can tip the DoorDash drivers both via the app and with cash.
How to Use DoorDash Cash on Delivery?
Let’s talk about how the “Cash on Delivery” feature works on DoorDash. The most important thing to understand is that the drivers, or “Dashers,” choose whether to accept to be paid in cash or not.
A customer can request to pay “Cash on Delivery,” and DoorDash will inform dashers in the proximity of the order. The Dasher has the option to accept or decline. If they choose to decline, it doesn’t reflect badly in any way on their acceptance rate.
If they accept, the customer will pay the Dasher in person. The money they’ve collected remains in their possession and is deducted from their next scheduled direct deposit by DoorDash.
However, even though this service was still recently available on DoorDash, it wasn’t always easy to place an order for “Cash on Delivery.”
Unsurprisingly, not many drivers want to handle cash or worry about being paid in full. Online payments are much more convenient, so they make up for the majority of orders on DoorDash.
Do keep in mind that DoorDash does accept gift cards via the app too. This is a workaround solution for those who don’t have anything but cash on them. You can go to a store (which is of course somewhat counter productive) to purchase one or have a friend or family member buy you one online.
Additional DoorDash Cash on Delivery FAQs
1. What if the DoorDash Driver Doesn’t Have Enough Change?
Drivers are only encouraged to accept “Cash on Delivery” only if they can manage to have enough change for the customer. However, mistakes happen, and the drivers may find themselves without enough change to give back to the customer.
DoorDash’s protocol in this situation is first to inform the customer about the situation. Unfortunately, that also means that they can’t hand over the delivery to the customer but instead return it to the restaurant.
They have to contact DoorDash support and ask them to create another delivery. If this happens too many times, DoorDash drivers can get a suspension on receiving “Cash on Delivery” orders.
2. Does DoorDash Still Accept Cash During the Covid Crisis?
As mentioned, DoorDash has suspended the “Cash on Delivery” feature on their app. Furthermore, like many delivery companies, they’ve established the “no-contact delivery” system as the default settings on all of their orders.
When a customer places the order, the “Leave it at my door” option will appear. You can enter additional instructions to ensure the Dasher completes the delivery.
Dashers are also required to wear masks during deliveries. It’s unknown when DoorDash will resume the “Cash on Delivery” option at this point.
3. Do I Need Exact Change for DoorDash Delivery?
If you’re a Dasher, it’s preferable to have enough change for the delivery when it is paid in cash. It makes things easier both for you and the customer. If you don’t have exact change, it’s not a great idea to rely on the hope that the customer will leave a tip.
However, the opposite can happen as well. The customer might not have enough cash on hand to pay the order.
In that case, they can’t receive the order, and the Dasher will have to return the order to the restaurant. The Dasher is then compensated half of the guaranteed minimum amount.
4. What if the Customer Claims That They’ve Paid Online?
This can be an uncomfortable situation, but the Dashers must know that that it’s impossible. The Dasher must inform the customer that there has been a mistake and that they will have to return the food to the restaurant. The Dasher will have to notify DoorDash support about the incident.
5. Can I Switch My DoorDash Order From Credit to Cash?
As the “Cash on Delivery” system is discontinued at the moment, this is not something you need to worry about.
However, even while it was still available, you couldn’t switch to cash delivery once the order was already placed. If you would insist on paying in cash, the only option would be to cancel the current order and place another one. So, let’s see how you can cancel a DoorDash order via the app:
1. Launch the DoorDash app and go to the “Orders” tab.
2. In the top-right corner, select “Help.”
3. Go to “Help Menu” and select “Cancel Order.” Or select the “Cancel Order” button under the “Order Details” section.
4. Then, follow the prompts on the screen.
However, keep in mind that you can only cancel an order that hasn’t yet been delivered. Also, you will only get a full refund if the restaurant has not yet confirmed your order and the Dasher hasn’t been assigned.
A partial refund is possible if the restaurant has confirmed, but the Dasher hasn’t been assigned. Finally, you won’t get any refund if both the restaurant confirmed and the Dasher was assigned to your order.
6. How Do I Tip With Cash When Using DoorDash?
DoorDash has a built-in tipping feature on the app. If you’re a tipper, you can rely on this system to secure the tip for the Dasher. You can choose one of the recommended Dasher tips on the app or select “Other” to enter the amount manually.
However, some people are more comfortable with the idea of checking out the service before tipping. That leaves them with the option of tipping in person with cash.
General service industry guidelines apply in this system. Depending on your total bill for the order, add anywhere between 10-20% of the bill’s cost for the tip.
Many DoorDash drivers appreciate the tip in cash because they can pocket the money right away and not wait for the direct deposit from DoorDash. Also, tipping with cash lets them know who tipped them. Tips via the app are anonymous.
7. Am I Required to Tip the DoorDash Driver?
DoorDash strongly encourages their customers to tip their drivers. In fact, the business model, in many ways, relies on the fact that the majority of customers do indeed tip the Dashers.
That is why DoorDash includes the tipping section before you proceed to the checkout. However, if you don’t want to leave a tip or you want to give the Dasher a tip in cash, you have to proceed to “Other” to enter a sum of zero.
Expecting the Return of Cash on Delivery on DoorDash
The Covid-19 crisis has hit a pause on the “Cash on Delivery” feature on DoorDash. However, you can still tip the Dashers in cash if you choose to. You can also do everything on the app, including placing the order and tipping.
For now, DoorDash, like many other on-demand delivery apps, provides “no-contact delivery,” which seems to be working well. What the future holds for companies such as DoorDash no one knows, but for now, satisfied customers can tip the Dashers in two different ways.
